A better Northern, from start to finish

As the UK’s largest train operator outside of London our modernisation plans have an enormous impact on the way we all travel in the future. Our customers are already reporting a positive difference to their end-to-end journeys. This includes:

  • Northern Smart cards, offering are a quicker and easier way to renew your season ticket and fly through the station
  • The installation and upgrade of 600 ticket machines giving customers more ways to buy a ticket and access a full range of fares, including discounts and concessions
  • The refurbishment of over fifty percent of our trains and sprucing up our station environments
  • Free WiFi and plug sockets at every seat on our new trains to keep you connected at all times
  • Increased customer service training, including disability and dementia awareness, to make sure you get the help you need on your travels
  • Working with users to constantly improve our app and website to make it easier to plan your journey, get up-to-date travel information and buy and collect your tickets
  • The recruitment of 55 Travel Safe Officers to make every journey as pleasant and safe as it can be
